Dietetics is the science of applying knowledge in food and nutrition in order to improve and maintain good health.
In Sanad Hospital, the Dietetics department identifies nutritional risks and evaluates, plans and implements treatment programs and educates patients. The department’s primary focus is to educate the public regarding health issues and to promote the optimal nutritional status of patients through medical nutrition therapy. All admitted patients that are diagnosed with nutritional risks by the treating team are assessed by the clinical dietitian to determine their nutritional status. As a result, a variety of different diets are offered, dependent on a patient’s needs.
Future plans for the Dietetics Department include the plan to establish a Gastric bypass, Gastric Banding, Gastric Balloon Surgery and Bariatric Surgery program. Clinical dieticians will counsel patients prior to surgery and will work closely with the patients post-surgery to assess and evaluate their nutritional status and weight loss.
Conditions that require nutritional assessment include:
• Heart diseases
• High blood cholesterol
• Renal (patient with kidney disease)
• Pregnancy diet
