The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is responsible for the quantitative and qualitative analysis and interpretation of patient’s specimens, including tissue, blood, urine, and other body fluids.
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Sanad Hospital provides modern diagnostic laboratory facilities with 24 hours of laboratory services. Competent Laboratory consultants, Specialists and Technicians, certified by the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties, run the unit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. State of the art technology and fully automated equipment is utilized to deliver fast and accurate results.
Services offered are:
The Hematology section offers services including, Complete Blood Count (CBC), platelets count, reticulocyte count, Hemoglobin electrophoeresis, ESR, Peripheral Blood Smear for cell morphology, malaria screen, sickle cell screen, Body Fluids cell counts, other special hematology tests and coagulation tests like PT-INR, APTT, Fibrinogen and D-Dimer using automated equipments like Sysmex XT-4000i, Sysmex XT-1800 and automated coagulation analyzer.
• Clinical Biochemistry:
The Clinical Biochemistry section provides testing for kidney function tests, liver function tests, bone function tests, cardiac markers tests, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, HBA1C, Osmolality tests, Hormones like Thyroid Function Tests, Fertility Hormones, Tumor Markers, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and other special tests using automated equipments like Roche Cobas 6000 analyzer series, Roche Cobas Integra 400 plus, Mini Vidas, Johnson & Johnson Vitros 350 and VitrosECiQ.
• Blood Bank & Transfusion Services:
The Blood Bank offers complete services including, Donor Recruitment, blood donation and collection, blood and blood products preparation, blood grouping, cross-match for transfusion, antibodies screen as well as therapeutic bleeding procedure. After blood has been drawn, it is tested for ABO group and Rh type (positive or negative), as well as for any unexpected antibodies that may cause problems in a recipient. Screening tests also performed as per standard of Saudi MOH, AABB and British Transfusion Service which includes Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), Hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc), Hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV), HIV I & II antibody, HTLV I & II, Malaria, Syphilis, Sickle cell screen as well as Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) for HBV, HCV and HIV I & II.
The Microbiology section offers services including, blood and other body fluids culture, sensitivity for antibiotic of bacteria isolated from cultures, fungal culture, gram stain and other stains for smear from body fluids like PUS, sputum, etc., AFB stain for M. tuberculosis, KOH preparation for fungal test and other special tests like semen processing for Intrauterine Insemination (IUI).
• Clinical Microscopy:
The Clinical Microscopy section offers services which include Urine analysis for chemicals like glucose, protein, etc. for crystals like uric acid or calcium crystals, for cells like WBC and RBC, Stool analysis for parasites, Occult Blood and Reducing substance, Semen Analysis, Body Fluids analysis like, CSF, Pleural Fluid, Ascitic Fluid and Pericardial Fluid.
• Immunology & Serology:
The Immunology & Serology section provides testing for the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases, PCR tests, Hepatitis viral infection tests, HIV I & II, HTLV I & II, Syphilis tests, Brucella, Rubella and parasitic diseases involving the use of Johnson & Johnson VitrosECiQ machine and Mini Vidas machine.
• Anatomic Pathology and Genetics:
The Anatomic Pathology section offers services including, Biopsies of surgical specimens removed from patients, Fine needle aspiration biopsies (FNAB), Cytology from body fluids, molecular genetics, chromosome analysis and FISH and flow cytometry.
